Walking with God, self, family and environment


My training walk today was a Divine experience!

I had planned a 3 hour 15 km walk as part of my build up to my 50 km walk on Sept 5. That day it should take 10-12 hours . In the end I did 10 km today in 2 hours .and how glorious those two hours were.

I started by counting my paces, stating to found each pace  (right foot left foot = 1) on the right foot
1.2.3.4.5.6,7,8,9,10
2,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
3.2.3.4.5.6,7,8,9,10
4,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
And so on till 100 paces when I fold a finger on left hand and count again
Approximately 600 paces every 5 minutes 

Pacing helps me focus on walking. It keeps my pace steady.

Then I tried music: my iPhone music used to help me rollerblade, so why not listen to music while walking
So I did a few more kilometers walking with music
Classical music
Christian music
It helps me feel good
It helped me build my relationship with myself.

Then I got whatsapp message from wife
And we has a few minutes pleasant whatapping
Walking and building relationship with wife.

Then I decided, if I can talk with wife while walking, I can talk with God while walking.
And I did!

So as I walked, and appreciated the environment (another dimension of my wholistic relational experience of this walk) I said to God in my inner voice "Hello God".
And He says to me (all this in my inner sense, more than imagination, yet not an audible voice)
" Hello Su Min"

"Errr.... it's nice to talk with you like this God"
"Yes it is indeed"

(now as I write this  some 15 hours later, I can't quite remember all the exact words, but it was as real as any conversation can get and went on for about 15 minutes)
"sorry I don't do this often enough"
"It's okay"

And God also said to me something like "you don't have to say anything, just being with me is good enough"

I also committed in prayer as I walked my friends with who were grieving with the recent death of a loved one and those with medical problems
and I received the assurance that God would take care of them.
This inner voice experience was awesome.

I want to go walking again!

Amos David Absalom

Amos was one of the Twelve Minor Prophets. Amos wrote at a time of relative peace and prosperity and neglect of religion. He spoke against an increased disparity between the very wealthy and the very poor. His major themes of social justice, God's omnipotence, and divine judgment became staples of prophecy. 
Two of his teachings are:
Prayers and sacrifices do not make up for bad deeds.
Behaving justly is much more important than ritual .

Fast forwards
Another Amos, 16 going on 17, has hit the headlines.
This Amos has a life of choices and decisions ahead of him.

Davidand Absalom
Hence my comparison to David and Absalom.
David had made many decisions in his life.
Many right ones and a few wrong ones.
When he went astray he was brought back in repentance to align with God.
Absalom on the other hand continued to make many wrong decisions.
Some blame his parents for poor upbringing, but at the end of the day each of us must be responsible for our own decisions.
Absalalom lead armed rebellion against his father.
Fleeing on horseback from David's army, at the battle of Ephraim wood Absalom's hair was caught in the branches of an oak tree.
Joab came and thrust three darts into him. killing him.

Moral of the story
At the end of the day each of us must be responsible for our own decisions.

A journey of a thousand li


A journey of a thousand li begins...

I used this poster to introduce my account of an attempt at one to one, face to face evangelism: At the top right you see an icon to remind me that Pastor asked us to set a target....


Church camp at Melaka was great: 
Pastor Daniel Ho lead us through four powerful sessions
1) Transformed by Jesus

2) Transforming our family

3) Transforming our church


4) Transforming the nation and beyond

The best thing to happen to us is to know Jesus
Therefore we should urgently want to share the good news with others
Pastor Daniel Ho encouraged us to be Proactive & Creative
Because evangelism works anywhere and everywhere.

He gave us several examples of his simple strategy for one on one witnessing.
Find some one new, ask for their name.
Introduce yourself: " I am Pastor Daniel Ho, minister at DUMC, Malaysia"

Say "[Name] you must be someone special.
"Of all the 8 billion people in the world, I get to meet you today."
Have a friendly chat
Ask about family
Work
Religion
End with "[Name] may I pray with you"
If appropriate, share the  new believers prayer.

Thank you (Acknowledge Jesus as Saviour, thank him for dying for us)
Please (Invite) Come into my life, take control

We were challenged to set an annual target of how many people to share good news with:



 
We discussed this challenge amongst our Church Camp Senior Citizen small group


And I said that the number that came to my mind was just one.
Start small
Start with one person
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step




One participant quipped that even one step was too much for him:
"Start with half a step" I encourage.
"Let that half step be a practice here"
"Say to Rosie, 'What is your name'"
And he did
Rosie repled, "My name is Rosie"
And then I said," Tell her 'My name is Daniel Ho from DUMC' " (my tiny joke)
and he did!
Then say "Rosie you must be someone very special.
Of all the 8 billion people in the world I get to meet you today"
And he did.
so that was his first half step!


It was Lau Tze who said 
 千里之行,始於足下
pinyinQiān lĭ zhī xíng, shĭ yú zú xià;
 literally: "A journey of a thousand  li starts beneath one's feet  = where one stands
 The quotation is from Chapter 64 of the Tao Te Ching.

Commonly rendered "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step"

And so my journey into face to face evangelism was to begin with victim number one....., one small step...


We were in the vicinity of Jonker Street to buy Nyonya curry powder.
A home business: we had been there before.
A single bottle of Nyonya curry powder is placed on a rack inside the chained and locked  collapsable iron gate.
You ring the door and they come to unlock the door.
Mdm Ong's son came to serve us:

Mdm Ong came out soon, and we started chatting.
"My Nyonya curry powder is original" she proudly says
"Made with 15 spices
The other people who sell 'nyonya curry powder' sell indian curry powder made with only 7 spices!"


On the wall above her was a poster with Psalm 27:1
"Are you Christian?" we asked
 "Yes" was the reply
"So are we."

Then we asked for a good chendol stall recommendation.
Without hesitation Mr Ong said
"Number one Chendol at the beginning of Jonker Street"


We got there soon and this chappie served us very nice in metal bowl,
 shaved ice, palm sugar, coconut milk and slick smooth green cendol worms.




I went outside to sketch the building. I came back inside to sketch the cendol man : I coloured my sketch with watercolours. They all admired my painting
What's your name, I asked the cendol man
"Anuar" he replied



    [At this point in my sharing I threw in this corny joke:
    "My name is Daniel Ho: I am pastor from DUMC " I said.
    "Anuar you must be a very special person. Of all the 8 billion people here on earth, I get to meet you today "
    Anwar said "Wah, Pastor I was there at DUMC last week.
    Within one week you pout on 20 kilogram, aged 20 years and grew a jangut:
    You Methodist pastors very wonderful"
    my joke was rewarded with roars of laughter!

    No lag just joking... then I reprised ]

    "My name is Su Min " I said.
    "Anuar you must be a very special person. Of all the 8 billion people here on earth, I get to meet you today "
    Anuar seemed to have a special interest in my sketch: he told me his mother was from Melaka, his father from KL, and his family lives in KL. Anuar came to Melaka 3 months ago to look for a job and found work at this cendol shop
    Then Anuar got ready to leave: "Finished work already?" I asked.
    Anuar looked sheepish " No lah just going for cigarette break"
    "How any cigarettes do you smoke a day?" I asked:

    "one pack of twenty in three days" he answered
    "So about 6 or seven a day?" I asked
    " yes" he confirmed
    "You should cut down" I suggested
    "Yes" he said , "especially since Ramadan is coming"
    (Muslim fasting month)
    Then Anuar left for his cigarette break.



    Anuar went out to smoke; I sketched and painted this postcard for him
    I gave it to Anuar when he came back from cigarette break: he was very happy

    Three named I wrote there: ANUAR, ISA, SU MIN
    (Isa is Jesus name in Koran)

    Anuar pointed to the name Isa.
    "I believe Isa" Anuar said!
    So Anuar is smoking Muslim who believes in Isa/Jesus!
    "May I pray with you" I asked softly.
    "Yes" Anuar agreed.
    So I prayed that Jesus would help Anuar stop smoking completely for Ramadan.

      • But the story does not finish: After that I crossed the bridge and went to draw some of the red buildings in Red Square: Church of Melaka and Clock Tower. I penciled and inked and painted my sketch with water colours:
        But as I sketched, for one full hour my heart was not at ease. I felt dark. Anger and frustration seethed inside me but I did not know why.
    • Then I walked by a church: Gereja St. Francis Xavier. It was Catholic Church. There was Chinese language singing going on. I was prompted to enter. I went inside and knelt down for 10 minutes: from my kneeling point I sketched the sanctuary, with the crucifix as central, and high vaulted ceilings, and arched window. :

      Then I felt peace... 
      So I went back to hotel
      • As I walked I figured out that part of my "Black" feeling was spiritual attack.
        And part of my miserable feeling was because I was disappointed that I did not feel excited after praying for Anuar.
        Then I seem to sense God say "Yes it is all part of spiritual warfare"

        And God says, "You don't need me to make you feel good:
        just know that God is pleased because you were obedient".

      Then at 2 am I woke with a sense of shalom, I jumped up to paint my sketch blue: different tones of blue, blue to represent peace.

    • So that is my long story and my attempt at intentional evangelizing, my first step in a long journey.

    Seeking the welfare of the city

    This sketchnote was created on iPad using software Paper_by_53.

    And their hardware: Pencil_by_53.

    As I progressed I decided to do repeated saves, partly as backup and partly to document my processs.

    One of the things I did was divide the area into a 3x3 grid. This helped me navigate as I used the "magnify" option of Paper_by_53.

    Another "note to self "... 
    Duplicate file from time to time:
     Plus button is held down for a long time.
    "Duplicdte" button appears: click to duplicate.

    Next note to self 
    Scribe within the Magnify circle
    (launch magnify with reverse pinch)

    As the grid was filling up I erased the "notes to self" and filled with text

    This was the completed chart: not the most elegant of my sketchnotes: minimum graphics
    But on the slope of a steep learning curve. I will improve!

    Today we celebrate SG50, 150 years of Methodism in Singapore and Aldersgate 

    Bishop Wee recalls a song he sang as a youth
    "this world is not my home"
    And reflected on the tension between wanting to be in heaven, vs on earth.

    The bible text Jeremiah 29:7
    WHO
    WHY
    HOW

    WHO?
    Speaking to Jews in exile in Babylon
    Pilgrims, aliens
    Exhorting them to seek the welfare, wellbeing of the country they were exiled to
    And speaking to us 
    Exhorting us to seek the welfare, wellbeing of the country we are "exiled" to.

    WHY?
    We are to do this because
    In its welfare we will find our welfare.

    Man's way: look after yourself first.
    God's way: look after others first.

    We in Singapore
    Don't care about other people
    tend to be navel gazing
    care about iurselves only
    care about our church only

    God is other-focused
    God so loved the world 
    John 3:16
    Jesus: The second commandment is of equal value
    Love your neighbour

    If you really love God you must love your neighbour.

    HOW
    How do you seek the welfare of a foreign country?
    One: Attitude
    make it your home
    Consider you will be there for many generations
    Two: Pray
             Provide feedback not complaints
             participate in the provision of improvement

    Don't pray for God to bless our dreams
    but ask God what are his plans

    Three: keep on the lookout for false prophets
    A) Christian
    B) Secular: who predict doom and gloom from
    "Statistics"
    "Rational arguments"

    Do not despise prophecy but test them
    1 Thess 5
    Hold fast to what is good
    Jer 33:3 Plans to prosper 

    John Wesley 
    1) The whole world was his parish 
    his work transformed England

    2) What is our mission?
    To reform the nation
    And spread scriptural holiness

    3) Witness of Methodists in Singapore
    Allowed themselves to benefit but not others
    "Where are the poor in Singapore?" they say.
    But the poor are there
    In the cracks
    Not visible to general society

    You have benefitted
    Work that the poor may receive the peace and prosperity that you have recieved.

    I showed Bishop Wee my sketchnote and I apologized  that my Holy Spirit looked more like a Holy Chicken.
    He had a good laugh.

    Where are your wounds?

    Faith seeking understanding
    Faith and live push us
    To want to know more
    To understand


    Good theology nurtures faith


    A small peek at the resurrection body


    Physical in nature
    Can see and touch

    Able to suspend some natural laws

    Can eat and drink

    Can enjoy fellowship

    Limitations removed
    No decay
    No disease
    No deterioration
    No death 

    This helps you to face your own mortality with courage and joyful expectation
    By God's grace!


    Why did the resurrected Christ still bear wounds ?
    Scars in hands
    Feet
    Side?

    Why did He remain mutilated?

    His body without the wounds
    Would be far less perfect
    Far less beautiful



    His wounds are
    Wounds of sacrifice
    Wounds of love.


    Beauty and perfection in God's eyes 
    Are not in external appearances


    If beautiful outside
    But self-centered 
    = hideous in God's sight
    = a deformed human being


    The world has excessive emphasis
    On external outward appearance.

    God sees a persons
    Acts of love
    Acts of sacrifice
    Wounded by loneliness

    Take home message
    Have you ever really made a sacrifice?
    Where are your wounds?



    Do you have beautiful hands?
    Look nice,
    But never did any work?

    Or do you have scarred hands
    Rough from carpenters work
    With wounds of love
    Of sacrifice
    Of giving?

    Hands constantly open in the act of giving?

    Closing prayer
    Dear God
    Give us eyes to see
    Beauty as you see
    Perfection as you see.

    Give us
    Deep love for people around us
    Love that drives us to sacrifice
    Even sacrifice that wounds
    Amen
